Madeline Island Heritage Center: Angus Family/Cheese Shop

According to northwestwisconsin.com, this structure was originally a logger's shack but was later moved and used by the Angus family - a family with deep roots on the Island - as a "Cheese House."  It was later donated to the Madeline Island Historic Preservation Association and today displays Angus family memorabilia.

Madeline Island Heritage Center: First Protestant Parsonage

Next to the Lakeview School building is a structure that was built as the first Protestant parsonage on Madeline Island.  Dating from the early 20th century, this parsonage has been moved many times.  According to northwestwisconsin.com, it was used for storage until donated to the Madeline Island Historic Preservation Association.

Madeline Island Heritage Center: More Lakeview School House

Interior shots of the Lakeville School House

Madeline Island Heritage Center: Lakeview School House

This authentic one-room school house is filled with authentic memorabilia. Colonel Woods Avenue at Island Lane was not the original location of the Lakeview School House.  It used to be on the northern part of the Island and was moved to its current spot more recently.  The structure dates to around 1904/1905 and is currently in beautiful condition (inside and out).  According to information I found online(northwestwisconsin.com), the school closed in 1938 and the building was used as a residence for many years.  It was gifted to the Madeline Island Historical Preservation Association in 1987 and has since been used as an interpretive site.

Madeline Island Heritage Center

During my many visits to the Island I've never stopped by this complex of old historic buildings.  Located at 273 Colonel Woods Avenue at Island Lane (just a ways up the street from the History Center) are three notable structures: the Lakeview School House, the First Protestant Parsonage, and the Angus Family/Cheese Shop.  Dale and I visited during my most recent trip.

Madeline 2013 - 2nd Trip: Saying Goodbye

Athena and I made it onto the 10: 30 ferry.  Dale made in onto the 2:00.  Can't believe we've made it through another season!

Madeline 2013 - 2nd Trip: Walking Athena

Last morning on the Island.  Dale needed to stick around to finish up some things.  I left early but not before getting Athena on a nice walk.  She met a new friend on Whitefish Street.

Madeline 2013 - 2nd Trip: Nature Walk

Dale and I heard some bluejays squawking earlier today.  Saw a turtle trying to cross the road over by the center.

Madeline 2013 - 2nd Trip: The Museum

I haven't been to the museum in about 10 years.  I'm glad I went.  It was lots of fun and the staff was very knowledgeable.

Madeline 2013 - 2nd Trip: More Grandpa Tony's

Madeline 2013 - 2nd Trip: Blue Green

Tonight we tried a new restaurant called Blue Green.  We each had a salad and the pork chop.  It was all delicious.

Madeline 2013 - 2nd Trip: The Ice Road

Dale and I stopped by the entrance of the ice road today.  Here he is walking toward it.  The part closest to the water looks like it's getting repaved.

Madeline 2013 - 2nd Trip: The Shape of the Island

Here I am photographing a window sticker that's in the shape of Madeline Island.

Madeline 2013 - 2nd Trip: Grandpa Tony's

We finally made it to Grandpa Tony's this season!  I had elephant tracks and chocolate peanut butter in a waffle cone.  Dale had malted chocolate in a cup.  So delicious!

Madeline 2013 - 2nd Trip: The Lupines

Although past their peak, the lupines are still looking rather lovely.  Dale says this year is the longest he's ever seen the lupines last.

Madeline 2013 - 2nd Trip: Beach Club

Lunch at the Beach Club today. Ordered the grilled whitefish sandwich.

Madeline 2013 - 2nd Trip: Athena

Woke up this morning to find Dale heading off for a run and Athena all settled in on the couch.  She's having a much easier time unwinding than I am!!

Madeline 2013 - 2nd Trip: La Pointe

The ferry got us to La Pointe yesterday shortly before 7:30 p.m.  We unpacked the groceries Dale had picked up in Duluth, got Athena on a quick walk, and then headed to The Pub for dinner.  I had the prime rib and Dale had the whitefish.

Madeline 2013 - 2nd Trip: Drive with Dale

Met Dale in Duluth yesterday as he had to return a rental car.  We drove the rest of the way together and made it to Bayfield in time for the 7:00 p.m. ferry.  It was something of a slow evening for the ferry line.  As we waited  Dale told me the 4th of July had been insanely busy with people coming to the Island and that all four of the ferry boats had been running pretty much non-stop all day.  I had really wanted to come up for the 4th this year but, due to the volume of work required for my summer course, decided against it.  Ah well, maybe next year.

Madeline 2013 - 2nd Trip: Athena

Drove up yesterday afternoon.  Athena was an angel in the car (as always).
